Issuing of a new work permit for foreign English teachers
Nowadays, the demand for learning English with foreign teachers is increasing rapidly. Foreign language centers are being established nationwide due to the advantages and outstanding benefits of learning English with native speakers:

However, not all teachers or foreign language center managers are fully aware of the necessary and sufficient conditions for obtaining work permits for foreign teachers, as the teaching profession is categorized as an expert position that must meet both labor regulations and educational standards. Therefore, when recruiting teachers, please pay attention to the following information:
1. Qualifications and Certifications:
Teaching Qualifications: Priority is given to teachers with teaching qualifications or international English teaching certifications such as TEFL, TESOL, or CELTA.
Teaching Experience: The teacher's previous teaching experience will be evaluated, particularly experience teaching English as a second language.
English Proficiency: The teacher must demonstrate a high level of English proficiency with accurate grammar, pronunciation, and fluency.
2. Assessment of Communication and Interaction Skills:
Direct Interview: A direct interview will be conducted to assess the candidate's communication skills, confidence, enthusiasm, and ability to convey knowledge.
Demonstration Lesson: Candidates will be required to conduct a demonstration lesson to observe their teaching methods, interaction with students, and ability to handle classroom situations.
3. Evaluation of Culture and Adaptability:
Understanding of Vietnamese Culture: The candidate's understanding of Vietnamese culture will be assessed, as this will help them adapt to the new working environment.
Adaptability: The candidate's ability to adapt to a new working environment and culture will be evaluated.
4. Background Check and Document Verification:
Verification of Information: Qualifications, work experience, and criminal records will be thoroughly verified.
Legal Documentation: The candidate must have all necessary documentation to work in Vietnam.
5. Development of a Clear Contract:
Rights and Responsibilities: A clear employment contract will be drawn up outlining the rights and responsibilities of both parties.
Working Hours: Working hours, days off, salary, and other benefits will be clearly defined.
6. Training and Support:
Training Program: Teachers will be provided with a suitable training program to familiarize them with the curriculum, assessment methods, and the school/center's work culture.
Professional Support: Teachers will receive ongoing professional support and assistance with any issues that arise during teaching.
Based on our experience, Inbound Vietnam has compiled the following essential steps and requirements for obtaining a new work permit for foreign teachers:
Required documents for foreign teachers to initiate the work permit application process:
- Bachelor's degree, or a Bachelor's degree in Education for education majors.
- One of the following teaching certifications: TESOL, TEFL, CELTA, etc.
- English language proficiency certificate at CEFR level C1 or equivalent under the Vietnamese National Framework of Languages (not applicable to citizens of the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada).
Depending on the specific case, foreign teachers may also need to provide additional diplomas or training certificates.
In addition, you will need to prepare the following documents for the foreign teacher:
- Health Certificate: A health certificate issued by a competent health authority of a foreign country or Vietnam, valid for 12 months from the date of the health conclusion to the date of submission of the application, or a certificate confirming that the person is in good health as prescribed by the Minister of Health.
- Criminal Record Certificate: A criminal record certificate or a document certifying that the foreign worker is not currently serving a sentence or has not had their criminal record expunged, or is not currently being prosecuted for a criminal offense in a foreign country or Vietnam. The criminal record certificate or document certifying that the foreign worker is not currently serving a sentence or has not had their criminal record expunged or is not currently being prosecuted for a criminal offense must be issued no more than 6 months prior to the date of submission of the application.
- Personal Documents of the Manager: Passport, visa, and a 4x6 cm white background passport photo.
To issue a new work permit for a foreign teacher, the following steps must be followed:
- Job posting: In accordance with the law, job postings must be made in the province or city where the foreign worker will be employed. The specific location for posting is determined based on the establishment permit, and it is usually done through the provincial/city Employment Center. The posting period is 15 days.
- Request for approval to use foreign labor: This step involves explaining the need to employ a foreign worker in a specific position. The processing time for this step is 15-20 days.
- Application for a work permit: A work permit application must be submitted based on the approved position and documentation.
Please note that when submitting an application for a new work permit for a foreign teacher, all documents must be original or certified copies. If the documents are from a foreign country, they must be legalized by the consular authority, unless they are exempt from legalization. Documents in a foreign language must be translated into Vietnamese and notarized or authenticated in accordance with Vietnamese law.
